Clean practice, in principle
Good laboratory practice centers on cleanliness, care, and documentation: a clean work surface, appropriate personal protective equipment, careful labeling, and a record of what was done. These habits protect the person doing the work and the integrity of the results.
This is a general description of laboratory culture, not a procedure to follow at home. Real protocols are specific to a facility, its materials, and its oversight.
Labeling and traceability
Every container should be labeled clearly enough that anyone in the lab can identify its contents, its lot, and its date without guessing. Traceability — being able to connect a vial to its certificate and its history — is a safety practice as much as a quality one.
Ambiguous or unlabeled containers are a hazard. When in doubt, a material's identity should be confirmed, not assumed.
Disposal and jurisdiction
Research materials should be handled, stored, and disposed of according to accepted laboratory practice and the law in your jurisdiction. Rules differ from place to place, and following them is the responsibility of the person and institution in possession of the material.
The bright line
The most important safety principle in this whole library is also the simplest: research-use material is for research. Anything involving administration to a person or animal is a clinical question for a licensed provider, not a laboratory exercise.
